Once a to a thistle came a bee
\nwhich upon his stem alighted
\nto consort with blossoms sweet;
\nthe thistle was delighted.<\/p>\n
\nSaid the thistle to the bee,
\nYou fear not my greeny thorn,
\nIt is plain that you could love me
\nbetter than all others born.<\/p>\n
\nI see you have a thorn yourself,
\nA maiden thusly self-protected
\nCould sleep so well upon my down,
\nBy my prickles so unaffected.<\/p>\n
\nThe bee drank in his nectar fine
\nShe buzzed her wings in gentle song
\nShe danced her dance upon his leaves
\nAnd kissed each flower that came along.<\/p>\n
\nSwooning in the highland wind
\nThe thistle felt his joy ignited
\nBut as his petals slowly drained,
\nHe found his love was unrequited.<\/p>\n
\nGaily bedecked with golden pollen
\nthe merry bee flew to her hive
\nAnd the thistle wept a milky tear
\nof love bereft now and deprived.<\/p>\n
\nYoung men and maids who hear this tale
\nFall not in love with those who tarry
\nBe not the longing thistle here
\nwho trusts to fast and is not wary.<\/p>\n
\nAnd never be the flighty bee
\nWho samples each and every flower
\nwith your stinger in your hand,
\nto nestle in and then devour.<\/p>\n
\nIn everything, be tempered true
\nAnd love will find you where you are.
