Just as I imagined
\nthe space surrounding you
\nis uncluttered and solid,
\na contrast of gold and black,
\nlike the lightness and darkness
\nbehind your eyes.<\/p>\n
Was it for the things
\nyou carried so many times
\nthat this life calls to you?<\/p>\n
A life on the Roman roads,
\nof tents and shields;
\na field of rice tinged with blood,
\nand the smoke of gunpowder;
\na forest filled with prayer,
\nfaith used as a weapon.
\nThe many battles,
\nthe many taken,
\nthe many lost.<\/p>\n
Here, you root and grow.
\nYour hands do simple work,
\nsurrounded by all you passed
\non road after road:
\nhives of bees,
\nfields of wheat,
\nhouses with beds and tables
\nand chairs with four legs.<\/p>\n
You lay this life down
\nas an altar to whatever
\ndomestic gods gather about you.
\nFine offerings of honey,
\nof spice and soil,
\nof wax and feather,
\nof egg and grain.<\/p>\n
All these things are,
\nas the gifts of Able,
\npleasing in the eyes of the Lord.
\nForgiveness
\ncomes from out of the earth,
\neach tender shoot
